Overview

The evolving role of the Polytechnics demands a greater connectivity and strong linkages with local, national and international communities. The International Programmes and External Linkages Office (IPELO) is a unit which was established to ensure that the institution’s international mission is realized. In this regard, it has become important to promote national and international collaborations and develop partnerships with both local and foreign private and public institutions and organizations.

The office has been facilitating interactions between academic departments and industry and has been exerting a pool for financing the training, research and developmental activities in the Polytechnic.

Goal

The goal of IPELO among others is to establish, coordinate and maintain international relationships to ensure that the institution achieves its international mission.

Objectives

1. Encouraging international education and collaboration by developing a variety of international educational opportunities for both teaching and non-teaching staff of the Polytechnic community.

2. Encouraging and supporting department and staff participation in international projects, programmes, research and scholarly pursuits.

3. Establishing international links with relevant educational institutions and other organizations with the view to sending staff and students to foreign institutions on exchange programmes.

4. Seeking sponsorship from collaborations with international organizations for the establishment of facilities for enhancing teaching and learning.

5. Supporting the development of appropriate centres and other units that have an international and intercultural focus.

Staffing

The office is under the direction of a Dean, with assistance from a Senior Administrative Assistant and Administrative Assistant.

Activities

IPELO is in collaboration with the Solar Training Centre seeking to establish a Solar Technology Center (STC) for the Polytechnic.

Plans are far advanced for collaboration with some Universities in Finland including Vaasa University of Applied Science, University of Vaasa and Oulu University in the area of joint research and lecture and student exchange programmes.

There are other collaborative arrangements with the Bocconi University of Italy and Highburg College of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom.

The office is also arranging to establish a relationship with University of Johannesburg so that the technical training in the Polytechnic could be enhanced.

The resuscitation of the Polytechnic and University of Derby collaboration to help train personnel in oil and Gas industry is far advanced.

The office in conjunction with the Vice Rector’s office was able to secure, ten (10) scholarships for lecturers to start PhD programmes in March, 2016 with some Chinese Universities.

Sixteen (16) other opportunities also in China are available for lecturers. IPELO is liaising with the Office of the Rector, Vice Rector and the Deans to select those who will be the beneficiaries for their PhD in September, 2016

Collaboration with two Universities in Finland which was stalled is set to be resuscitated before the end of December, 2015 for the benefit of the staff.

Collaboration with Plymouth University for some of the past students of HCIM is also underway. Talks will be completed soon and the programme can take off after a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed, so that those interested continue their studies in United Kingdom.

IPELO has secured Associate membership of the Ghana Renewable Energy Association for Takoradi Polytechnic.

IPELO participated in the first (1st) Ghana Renewable Energy Conference and the fourth (4th) West African Clean Energy & Environment Exhibition and Conference (WACCE) from the 3-5 November 2015 at Accra International Conference Center.
