Brief description of the Department
The HND Civil Engineering programme was given birth to as a result of the upgrading of the Polytechnic to the tertiary status in 1993 under the Ghana Education Reform Programme.

The Department used to be part of the Building and Civil Engineering Department (with Furniture Design and Production as a Unit). In 2006, the Civil Engineering Department was created to continue running the ‘traditional’ Civil Engineering programme and Competency-Based Training (CBT) leading to the award of Higher National Diploma (HND).

Mission
To produce middle-level highly technical and competent engineers who are theoretically knowledgeable and practically skilled to man industries in the nation.

Vision
To produce competency-based trained HND and B. Tech. graduates who would contribute meaningfully to the civil engineering and construction industry in the country, in the area of:

  • Water and Sanitation Engineering;
  • Environmental Engineering;
  • Structural Engineering; and
  • Highway and Transportation Engineering, in addition to the B-Tech. in Civil Engineering Programme.

Goals
To produce highly competent Civil Engineering Technicians and Graduates

Objectives
Through research and constant interaction with industry, regularly review and modify our training contents to meet the ever-changing needs and demands of modern construction and Civil Engineering industry.

HND Competency Based-Training (CBT) in Civil Engineering

Future Plans
The Department is working with its sister department at Kumasi Polytechnic towards mounting Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) programmes in Civil Engineering with the following options: Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Structural Design Engineering.

The Department is affiliated to HANZE University, the Netherlands and plans to mount an M.Sc. programme in Civil Engineering Project Management.
