The Department offers a variety of courses which are geared in making our students self sufficient and self employed in future. Students are equipped with both theoretical and practical skills in the preparation and production of artifacts such as water, tea and coffee pots, casseroles, mugs, bricks and tiles, construction of potter’s wheel, gas and firewood kilns, using clay as raw material. Courses offered include Kiln construction Technology, Bricks and Tiles production, Ceramics Mould and Casting processes and Studio Ceramics.

Vision
The vision of the Department is to achieve excellence in the production of middle level man-power so as to promote economic growth, industrialization and research in Ghana.

Mission
The mission of the Department is to provide a tertiary level education through full time courses leading to the award of Higher National Diploma in Ceramics and also to encourage research in ceramics.

Goals
The overall goal of the Department is to produce well-trained career oriented graduates who are well-equipped with practical skills for self-employment and meant to fit well into middle level management positions in industries.

Objectives

  1. To provide candidates with practical skills and attitudes required for industrialization;
  2. To instill in candidates creative thinking that leads to high productivity; and
  3. To produce graduates who are technically competent to conveniently fit into the world of work.

Programmes
Currently, the Department offers a 3-year HND programme in Ceramics. The major courses offered include Formation of Clay bodies, Ceramics Design Technique, Studio Ceramics, Glaze Formulation, Ceramic calculations, Firing, Traditional Ghanaian Pottery, West African Traditional Pottery, Kiln Design and Construction, Structural Clay products, Ceramic Mould and Casting processes and Computer Aided Design.

Future Plans
The Department intends to expand its programs to offer:

  1. B-Tech in Ceramics
  2. B-Tech in Glassware Technology
  3. HND in Glassware Technology
  4. Certificate courses in Pottery.
  5. Certificate courses in Clay Beads production
  6. Set up a production unit.
