Structure of the Programmes

(i)     The HND in Painting is a three-year programme spanning six (6) semesters. In the first two semesters, students are introduced to foundation courses in painting geared towards deepening their perceptual, analytical and technical skills in their chosen area of study. Students are assisted to explore the natural and artificial environment to develop ideas, guided by relevant theories on the principles of art. Through vigorous exercises in two and three dimensional drawing techniques with various wet and dry media, students are guided to have firm grounding in basic art.

The next three semesters are designed to allow students’ natural talent to gradually     evolve through practical exercises in painting techniques. Further theoretical and practical instructions in History of Painting, Materials and Methods, Printmaking and Digital Painting are frantically pursued to broaden their artistic perspectives. Exploration into the usage of local materials and objects from the natural environment is also taken up vigorously.

Courses taken up in the last semester have the goal of challenging students to develop critical self-awareness about their work through independent study, group critique and seminars. Ultimately, these exercises are meant to at assist them to acquire individual styles and personal identities.

(ii)   The Painting and Decorating programme, on the other hand, is non-tertiary. It is designed to train students and other categories of trainees as craftsmen in industrial painting. Under this module, intermediate and advanced courses in painting are mounted with the objective of providing sound practical and technological know-how relevant to the painting and decorating industry.
